Formula basis

Checks whether both the age range and the minimum weight for the selected donation type are met (200mL whole blood: age 16-69, weight >=45kg for men / >=40kg for women; 400mL whole blood: age 17-69 for men / 18-69 for women, weight >=50kg for both; plasma component: age 18-69, weight >=45kg for men / >=40kg for women; platelet component: age 18-69 for men / 18-54 for women, weight >=45kg for men / >=40kg for women). For ages 65-69, the Japanese Red Cross's exception is applied: the age condition is only considered met if the person donated blood at some point between turning 60 and turning 65.

Calculation method

Uses sex, age, and weight to give a preliminary check against the Japanese Red Cross Society's published main age and weight eligibility criteria for four donation types (200mL/400mL whole blood, plasma component, and platelet component donation).

Exclusions and checks required

  • Other real eligibility criteria — blood pressure, pulse, body temperature, hemoglobin level, interval since last donation, annual donation volume limits, pregnancy status, travel history, and the health questionnaire — are not evaluated at all.
  • This is only a preliminary check; actual eligibility to donate is always determined on-site through a health questionnaire and screening at the blood donation center or bus.

Example input::67-year-old man, 65kg, no donation between ages 60-64

sex
Male
age

No / not applicable

Based on the main age/weight criteria alone this reads as not eligible, but the actual decision must always be confirmed on-site at the time of donation.
