Calculation basis and official references

Reviewed on:

This calculator is not a diagnosis, treatment plan, or prescription. Please consult a qualified clinician about your medical decisions.

Formula basis

Uses age (1-18) and sex as keys into a reference table, then computes the difference between the entered height/weight and the looked-up reference values.

Calculation method

Looks up the national reference average height and weight for the given age and sex from the latest government survey figures and compares them with the entered values.

Exclusions and checks required

  • Ages 1-4 come from the decennial Infant and Preschooler Physical Growth Survey while ages 5-17 come from the annual School Health Statistics Survey, so the underlying survey year and method differ by age.
  • Age 18 is outside both the School Health Statistics Survey (ages 5-17) and the infant growth survey, so no current official figure backs that row.
  • This is not a growth-curve or month-level clinical assessment.

Example input::Example: 6-year-old boy, height 115cm, weight 20kg

sex
Male
age
6
height
115
weight
20

The difference from the reference average (116.9cm/21.6kg) is a statistical comparison only, not an assessment of the child's development.
