Formula basis

Your estimated BMR = revised Harris-Benedict equation (same as the BMR calculator). Reference benchmark = Table 3 "Basal Metabolic Rate Standard Values" (column (A)x(B)) of the "Dietary Reference Intakes for Japanese (2025 edition)" report, i.e. the published basal metabolic rate at reference body weight (kcal/day) for your age group and sex. Difference = your estimated BMR minus the reference benchmark.

Calculation method

Compares your own estimated BMR (revised Harris-Benedict equation) with the Japanese government's published reference basal metabolic rate for your age group and sex, per the 2025 edition of the Dietary Reference Intakes for Japanese, calculated at a fixed reference body weight rather than your own input weight.

Exclusions and checks required

  • The benchmark values are fixed figures from the 2025 edition of the Dietary Reference Intakes for Japanese (effective from Japanese fiscal year 2025), using age brackets (1-2, 3-5, 6-7, 8-9, 10-11, 12-14, 15-17, 18-29, 30-49, 50-64, 65-74, 75+) and do not depend on the weight you enter.
  • The older-adult brackets in the 2025 edition are 50-64, 65-74, and 75+ (three brackets), versus 50-69 and 70+ (two brackets) in the 2015 edition, with different numeric values. Future revisions of the standard may change these brackets and values again.
  • The benchmark reflects a population average and does not account for individual differences in body composition or muscle mass.

Example input::A 40-year-old man, 170 cm tall, weighing 65 kg

age
40
sex
Male
height
170
weight
65

Your estimated BMR is about 1,547.9 kcal, and the reference benchmark is 1,570 kcal (the 2025-edition reference-weight basal metabolic rate for men aged 30-49). The difference is a statistical comparison, not a judgment of better or worse.
