Formula basis

Baldwin equation: predicted VC (mL) = (27.63 − 0.112 × age) × height(cm) for men, (21.78 − 0.101 × age) × height(cm) for women. JRS equation: predicted VC (L) = 0.045 × height(cm) − 0.023 × age − 2.258 for men, 0.032 × height(cm) − 0.018 × age − 1.178 for women, multiplied by 1000 to display in mL. This implementation displays both results as computed, including decimals.

Calculation method

Calculates predicted vital capacity from sex, age, and height using two equations: the Baldwin prediction equation and the Japan Respiratory Society (JRS) prediction equation published in 2001.

Exclusions and checks required

  • Both are population regression estimates; actual vital capacity varies significantly between individuals, and an accurate assessment requires a measured test such as spirometry.
  • The JRS equation was derived for adults (the 2001 committee's study population was age 20 and older). If an age under 18 is entered, this calculator computes and displays the formula's result anyway, which is an extrapolation outside the equation's intended range.
  • The Japan Respiratory Society also published newer LMS-method reference values in 2014; whether to use the 2001 equations (used by this calculator) or the 2014 LMS equations depends on the institution and purpose.

Example input::Example for a 40-year-old man, 170 cm tall

sex
Male
age
40
height
170

The predicted value is an estimate from population averages and differs from an individual's measured vital capacity.
