Formula basis

Men: BMR (kcal/day) = 13.397 x weight(kg) + 4.799 x height(cm) - 5.677 x age(years) + 88.362. Women: BMR (kcal/day) = 9.247 x weight(kg) + 3.098 x height(cm) - 4.33 x age(years) + 447.593.

Calculation method

Estimates the energy required to maintain basic life functions at rest (BMR) from age, sex, height, and weight, using the revised Harris-Benedict equation (Roza & Shizgal, 1984).

Exclusions and checks required

  • The equation does not directly account for body composition (lean mass), so accuracy decreases for people with unusually high or low muscle mass.
  • It is a regression equation derived from a 1984 study population and is not a substitute for measured resting energy expenditure (indirect calorimetry).
  • Conditions affecting metabolism, such as thyroid disorders, can cause this estimate to diverge from an individual's actual basal metabolic rate.
