Formula basis
TDEE (kcal/day) = BMR (kcal/day) x activity factor. BMR uses the same equation as the BMR calculator (men: 13.397W + 4.799H - 5.677A + 88.362; women: 9.247W + 3.098H - 4.33A + 447.593). Activity factor: sedentary = 1.2, light exercise = 1.375, moderate = 1.55, hard exercise = 1.725, very hard = 1.9.
Calculation method
Estimates Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) by multiplying your basal metabolic rate (revised Harris-Benedict equation) by an activity-level factor (1.2 to 1.9) that reflects your typical daily activity.
Exclusions and checks required
The five-tier activity factor scale (1.2-1.9) is a widely used convention in Western fitness and nutrition guidance, not a value fixed by a single peer-reviewed paper or government standard (no single primary academic source could be confirmed; see open questions).
The BMR component is an estimate from the Roza & Shizgal (1984) regression equation, not a measured value from indirect calorimetry.
Actual energy expenditure varies day to day with body composition, ambient temperature, and non-exercise daily activity (NEAT).
